This is your OPPORTUNITY!

ImageIn the fall of 2003, as I was preparing to leave Michigan State for chiropractic school, after many years of education, philosophy, thinking, and planning, I started to develop a real life plan.  It was literally a game plan on not only how I wanted my life but a start and direction in which to head.  That direction was all centered on a couple of core beliefs.  One of which being, “treat every day as an opportunity to better myself and help make an impact on bettering my community’s health and well-being.”  Granted, my life plan changed A LOT over the years but the core belief has always stood strong.

Every winter, my brain always gets fixated on opportunity, change, and growth. Life has had a funny but all so real way of reminding me to “live life to the fullest” and “don’t take anything for granted.” Recently, after burying a healthy and happy friend, who passed in a tragic accident at the age of 29, the cliché sayings still ring true to this day but opportunity often falls to the way-side.

We get lazy.  It is not that we don’t care but we stop showing appreciation to the loved ones around us, we settle in to the “this is my life” mentality, or worse, we close off our worlds to new things, ideas and opportunities.  We whine and moan about the weather, politics, insurance, our jobs and the rest of our lives.  What good does it do?

Use this month to start pushing the winds of change in the direction of a new opportunity, a new or better defined direction in life.  Come up with a plan!  It is not written in stone, IT WILL CHANGE!  Be a ninja and ADAPT!  Spring is almost upon us so use the fall to grill some tasty eats and start the migration (between basketball games) of your ass off the couch and toward someplace that will keep you active through the lovely summer months instead of packing on those insulating holiday pounds.  Your body will thank you.  Take a few hours, sit down in a quiet place by yourself and do some thinking and planning.  Share it with the people or person that you share your life with.

Most people wake up, start their morning ritual, go to work, come home, and then start their evening ritual, day-in and day-out, over and over again.  If that is how you want to live your life then good for you, enjoy the ride because it will be over faster than you think.  Be sure to have a little fun along the way if you can afford it between paychecks.

What most people never realize is that opportunity is all around us all of the time.  Every day we have the opportunity to make better decisions about what we eat, drink, think, and do.  Often people fall into the “have-do-be” mindset, which means, once I HAVE what I want (usually money), then I can DO what I want (vacation, relax, etc.), and then I will BE the person that I’ve always wanted to be (successful).  The problem with that way of think is that it is backwards!

Instead, think “BE-DO-HAVE.”  Figure out who and what you want to BE, define your beliefs, goals and dreams.  Then you will DO the things that coincide with those beliefs.  Your actions will now align with your core principles.  Once you begin to live your life this way, you will HAVE the things or at least be on the path to get the things that you have already defined.  Your life is no longer a walking contradiction.  When an opportunity presents itself, weigh your options and TAKE IT or MOVE ON to the next opportunity.

Life is short and time seemingly speeds up as we age.  It can be full of regret from opportunities missed or life can be a wonderful, fun, and amazing journey of learning about this crazy world as well as coming to a better understanding of our self and our place in this universe.

Get the Junk Out!

Image

It’s fall!    While walking around downtown GR the other day, I wandered down by the river to check things out.  I was staring into the water and noticed something.  There is a LOT of garbage and junk floating down the river and being tumbled along bottom.  In other words, there is a bunch of crap in the water that shouldn’t be there.  Why is this important?

Like the river, we have thousands of miles of blood vessels that carry the blood in our bodies to and from the heart.  When that blood is clean, it has the proper chemical composition and is free of damaging debris.  Blood is supposed to flow unrestricted delivering oxygen and nutrients to EVERY cell in the body.  However, just like the river, things end up in the blood that shouldn’t be there or at least shouldn’t be there in mass quantity.  Cholesterol can start to oxidize, like a rusty pipe, and begin to clog your blood vessels, especially the ones supplying the heart, leaving you more susceptible heart attacks.  Heavy metals from our food and our environment can stay in the blood for long periods of time and have a compounding effect as we grow older, which has been linked to many diseases like Alzheimer’s, dementia, and Parkinson’s.  These diseases are put into motion long before they are diagnosed usually between ages 60-85.

Have you ever felt sluggish or out of sync? Have skin issues, aches and pains, or digestive problems? Straying from your healthier habits lately? Having trouble kicking off your weight loss? It might be time to detox your body!

Contrary to what modern medicine says, your body actually has the ability to heal itself without the need for Tylenol, Ibuprofen, Motrin, Advil, etc! (If it has the proper, organic nutrition and clear communication from the brain to the body and back again.)

Detoxification is about resting, cleaning and nourishing the body from the inside out. By removing and eliminating toxins, then feeding your body with healthy nutrients, detoxifying can help protect you from disease and renew your ability to maintain optimum health.

How does detoxification work?

Basically, detoxification means cleaning the blood. It does this mainly by removing impurities from the blood in the liver, where toxins are processed for elimination. The body also eliminates toxins through the kidneys, intestines, lungs, lymph and skin. However, when this system is compromised, impurities aren’t properly filtered and every cell in the body is adversely affected.

How can it help?

1) Resting the organs through fasting;
2) Help the liver to drive toxins from the body;
3) Promoting elimination through the intestines, kidneys and skin
4) Improving circulation; and
5) Rebooting the body with tons of healthy nutrients down to the cellular level.

How do you know if you should detox?

The average person should detox at least once per year.  Some people do it quarterly.  A short detox or cleanse is generally safe; in fact, scientific studies show that a detox is beneficial for health. However, for nursing mothers, children, and patients with chronic degenerative diseases, cancer or tuberculosis, I wouldn’t personally recommend it. Please consult your health care practitioner if you have questions about whether detoxing is right for you.

Unfortunately, toxins are everywhere around us, especially in the environments we live and work it.  I believe it is CRITICAL to detoxify your body, even if you think you are eating only the right things, exercising, and are generally healthy, bad things from our environment continue to build up over time. You could try detoxing for symptoms such as unexplained fatigue, sluggish elimination, irritated skin, allergies or low-grade infections; bags under the eyes; a distended stomach even if the rest of your body is thin; menstrual difficulties; or mental confusion (main reason why I detox).

Where to start?

First, lighten up your toxin load. Eliminate alcohol, coffee, cigarettes, refined sugars and saturated fats, all of which act as toxins in the body and are obstacles to your healing process. Also, minimize use of chemical-based cleaners and personal health care products (cleansers, shampoos, deodorants and toothpastes, and make-up!), and substitute some natural alternatives.  Check out http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/ for more info.

What about stress? Stress triggers your body to release stress hormones into your system. While these hormones can push your body to the “fight or flight” state that it needs to gear up for war or to get the heck out of dodge, in large amounts they create toxins and slow down detoxification enzymes in the liver. So it’s a good idea to detox stressful life situations along with detoxifying your body.  Yoga, deep breathing, meditation and exercise are simple and effective ways to relieve stress by resetting your physical and mental reactions to the inevitable stress life will bring.

Which detox program is best for you?

There are many detoxification programs and cleanses available depending on your individual needs. I usually recommend that people start with replacing breakfast for 2 weeks with a healthy, fresh, organic vegetable juice, made at home from all organic ingredients and a slow-juicer.  It is a great way to start your day with a flood of awesome nutrition that is quickly absorbed into your system.  Also, it is a great way to prepare your body for a 10 day juice fast.

Other popular detoxing programs and natural body cleanses include:

  • Cleansing supplement packages, which generally contain fiber, vitamins, herbs and minerals. There are several safe products on the market, with easy-to-follow instructions.
  • A routine water fasting (drinking only water one day each week)

9 Ways to Aid Detoxification

After a detox, you can continue to cleanse your body daily through diet, supplements and lifestyle practices.

1. Eat plenty of fiber, including organically-grown fresh fruits and vegetables. Beets, radishes, artichokes, cabbage, broccoli, spirulina, chlorella, and seaweed are excellent detoxifying foods.

2. Cleanse and protect the liver by taking herbs such as dandelion root, burdock and milk thistle, and drinking green tea.

3. Eat foods rich in vitamin C (kale, bell peppers, cherries, sun-dried tomatoes, broccoli, etc.), which helps the body produce glutathione, a liver compound that drives away toxins.

4. Drink at least half of your body weight in ounces of water every day.  (200lbs = 100 oz. water)

5. Breathe deeply from the diaphragm to allow oxygen to circulate more completely through your system.

6. Dissipate stress by focusing on the positive side of things.

7. Try sweating in a sauna so your body can eliminate wastes through perspiration.

8. Try detox foot baths and exfoliating your skin to remove toxins through your pores.

9. Most importantly…EXERCISE at least 30 min. per day but shoot for an hour of combined strength training and cardio exercise to reap the full benefits of dissipating stress (but don’t go kayaking down a flooding river).

Remember, detoxing can be tough.  Some people are incredibly toxic because of where they live, what they eat, the amount of stress in their lives, and their lack of willingness to exercise.  These people will likely have a difficult time due to the amount of unnecessary junk built up in their systems. So take things slow.  It will take some time but your body will remember what it is supposed to do when it has proper nutrition and a little time to heal.

Calling All Sheeple!

Image

The resolutionists are slowly beginning their migration away from the gyms and their new diets.  Flu season is reportedly in full swing and “worse than ever” this year, so as usual, the local and national news is telling us that there are shortages of the vaccine and you “had better get vaccinated NOW!”  This article is intended to open some of your sheeple minds and give the other side of the story in the hopes that you make an informed decision about whether to get yourself or your kids vaccinated.

In West Michigan and around the world, viewpoints on vaccines vary greatly.  The information reported on the news is completely for routine vaccination of pregnant and nursing women, children, elderly and everyone in between.  There are vaccines for everyone and seemingly most illnesses that we are bound to encounter throughout our lives.  So should we get vaccinated you ask?

This is a question that I often encounter in my practice and it is a difficult one to answer.  Personally, I haven’t been vaccinated for anything since I was a child and I have never gotten the flu shot in my adult life nor will I ever.  Back in the early 80’s when I was young; I was vaccinated for 10 “diseases.”  Now, our kiddos are facing a crazy vaccine schedule of over 30 different things!

Chew on this for a minute.  If I had a can of PBR and injected it with Thimerosal (Methyl Mercury), aluminum salts, formaldehyde and some chicken embryos, would you drink it?  Guess what, those are just a few of the ingredients listed by the CDC on their website www.cdc.gov that are contained in those awesome flu shots that we’re supposed to be getting.  You could not pay me to inject that crap in my body.  In fact, a few weeks ago I was doing some research and happened upon the information sheet inserted with the Flulaval vaccine for the flu virus this year.  It says in black and white:

“…there have been no controlled trials adequately demonstrating a decrease in influenza disease after vaccination with FLULAVAL.”

“Safety and effectiveness of FLULAVAL have not been established in pregnant women, nursing mothers, or children”

In other words, IT DOES NOT WORK AND IT IS NOT SAFE!!! Are you kidding me!?  Yet, we’re supposed to get vaccinated with this stuff? I’m not buying it.

I may have a slightly bias view being a natural holistic health-care practitioner who specializes in the nervous system and uses scientifically proven and safe methods for reaching and maintaining optimal nervous system function in the body.  Yet, I never learned that our amazing body’s NEEDED the help of a synthetically-made virus to be injected into us so that when we encounter the “real thing” our bodies will already have the right tools to kick the illness in the butt.  Nope, I never learned that people had a Tamiflu deficiency or that people were lacking mercury in their body either.

Believers of the vaccines miraculous and necessary abilities would condemn those who oppose their view.  Whether you believe they work or not is YOUR CHOICE.  I just hope that you have done your research and are not just following the herd and doing what you’re told.  There is misinformation everywhere but recently, more and more cases of damages caused by vaccines have been reported and are actually being rewarded large sums of money for the expected damages the rest of their lives.  In fact, there is a National Vaccine Injury Compensation Fund that pays out millions of dollars to victims of the damaging effects of vaccinations every year.  But, you will never see these stories on the news.  Considering most TV stations are highly funded by the drug companies who produce these vaccines, you will never see them reporting on vaccines in a bad way.  They would stand to lose millions of dollars in ad revenue every year and that’s just bad business.  Sadly, you have to follow the money trail and all roads lead to Big Pharma who stands to make billions of dollars every year on vaccines alone regardless of who they injure or kill.

Some people argue that by not vaccinating, we would be inviting diseases like polio, measles, and small pox back into the modern world.  I don’t think so.  Did you know that before vaccines were even introduced in the early 1950’s, most of the big killers (measles, small pox, and polio) were already on the decline?  Medicine and supportive care were improving and so were nutritional choices.  It wasn’t the vaccines that saved the world.  It was our nation’s health improving.  Our sanitary conditions improved and people learned to wash their hands.

The difference between a sick person and a not sick person is how well their immune system is functioning.  A healthy immune system will kick the snot out of anything that it comes into contact with.  A not-so-healthy immune system will ensure illness and sickness over and over again.  You may get swine flu, bird flu, pig flu, duck flu or any other kind of flu that the news is reporting will cause the next pandemic and kill all of the people of the world.

How do you get and keep a healthy immune system?  It takes work and time.  Let’s start with exercise, healthy eating habits, portion control, de-stressing, and a fully connected, optimally-communicating nervous system that is running the whole show.  That is as natural as it gets.

Unfortunately, most sheeple of the world, they do not think for themselves.  They treat their bodies like they can just replace them someday by being injected  with poisons, eating processed foods that have the nutritional equivalent of crap and living lazy, uninspired lives because that may be all that they choose to know.  Every day, more people are waking up to the real world that we live in and are beginning to understand and question the powers that be.   Don’t be a sheeple and open your eyes.  You are responsible for your health, not the government or your insurance company.

Health & Happiness,

Dr. Mik
